The case of a 16-year-old Colombian teenager involved in the death of a U.S. citizen in Colorado has generated strong reactions both in the local community and in the national immigration debate.

The young man, whose identity has not been disclosed because he is a minor, was arrested along with his entire family by ICE agents on May 20, 2025, after being previously convicted of the accident.

The tragic incident occurred in July 2024 in Aurora, Colorado, when the Colombian teenager was driving 90 miles per hour in a residential area with a 45 mph limit.

Without a driver’s license and without legal status in the country, he lost control of the vehicle and collided with the car of Kaitlyn Weaver, 24, killing her on the spot.

Despite the seriousness of the act, the Colombian teenager avoided jail time after reaching a plea agreement with the Arapahoe County District Attorney’s Office:

Two years probation, 100 hours of community service and continuing his studies.

The sentence was strongly criticized by various sectors, including the victim’s family, arguing that justice was not done.

After learning of the sentence, ICE acted quickly.

Not only did he arrest the Colombian teenager, who remains in immigration custody while awaiting his hearing, but he also detained the rest of his family.

According to the federal agency, none of the members have current legal immigration status, although at least the young man has an asylum process pending.

The White House endorsed ICE’s action and publicized the case on official social media, underscoring its “zero tolerance” policy for crimes committed by undocumented immigrants.
