After the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025, the Vatican is preparing for the conclave that will elect his successor. Among the 135 cardinals with voting rights, two Mexicans stand out: Carlos Aguiar Retes, archbishop primate of Mexico, and Francisco Robles Ortega, archbishop of Guadalajara. Both have extensive experience in the Church and share a pastoral vision close to that of Pope Francis.

Aguiar Retes, 75, has been a key figure in promoting reforms within the Church in Latin America. Robles Ortega, 76, is recognized for his leadership of the Mexican Episcopal Conference and his focus on social and justice issues.

Do they have a real chance?

Although both cardinals meet the requirements to be elected pope in the conclave, experts believe their chances are limited.

Eurocentrism within the Roman Curia and the desire of some sectors of the Church to return to a more traditional and European leadership are factors that could play against a Latin American election.

In addition, the influence of Latin American clergy has diminished in recent years, reducing the likelihood of a Mexican cardinal being elected.

Nevertheless, their participation in the conclave is significant, as they represent the voice of one of the largest Catholic communities in the world.

His presence at the deliberations could influence the election of a pope to continue the reforms initiated by Francis.
