Argentina’s Ángel Correa, world champion with his country in Qatar 2022, scored a goal to give Tigres UANL a 1-1 draw with Cruz Azul on Wednesday in the semifinal of the Apertura of Mexican soccer.

Correa, for the felines, and the Uruguayan Gabriel Fernández, for the Azules, were the scorers in the match, the result of which favors Tigres because a draw in the second leg will take them into the final as they finished higher in the regular phase of the championship.

The excitement of the first half was reduced to the opening seconds.

Tigres was on the verge of opening the scoring:

In the second minute, goalkeeper Andrés Gudiño was left with a ball finished by Correa and then the Uruguayan Fernando Gorriarán crashed the ball against the post.

The Blues stepped into the box a couple of times, but after the fifth minute, both were predictable in attack.

Tangled in the midfield, they created little going forward.

The second half was different.

While the fans freely chanted the homophobic shout that Mexican fans say when they are dissatisfied, both teams missed opportunities to open the score.

Argentine Lorenzo Faravelli shot dangerously from outside the box, but Tigers goalkeeper Nahuel Guzmán appeared to clear.

Another Argentine, Juan Brunetta, missed in the area in the 53rd minute with everything in his favor to put the Tigres ahead, who were saved in the 59th minute, when Guzmán again appeared to keep out a shot by Rodolfo Rotondi.

Correa put Tigres ahead 0-1 in minute 61 with a right-footed conversion from a pass by Brazilian Romulo.

Tigres sat back waiting for a counterattack.

The Azules went on the attack and in the 76th minute rescued the equalizer with a penalty kick by Fernández.

The visitors regained their composure, stopped the Celestes’ onslaught and in the 89th minute gave up the chance to regain the lead, but Correa shot wide.

On Saturday, Tigres will host Cruz Azul.

The winner of the series will play for the title against the best of Toluca and Monterrey, the team where Spaniard Sergio Ramos plays.
