Cruz Azul defeated América 1-0 in the first leg of the Liga MX Clausura 2025 semifinal, played on Thursday night, May 15, at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario. With this result, the Cementero team has the advantage for the second leg, which will be played on Sunday, May 18 at the Ciudad de los Deportes Stadium.

The only goal of the match was scored by Ignacio Rivero, who headed in a corner kick in the 54th minute, beating the Azulcrema defense. The goal was enough for “La Máquina” to win yet another edition of the Clásico Joven, in which both teams arrived as serious contenders for the title.

The Uruguayan midfielder was not only the protagonist for the goal, but also for an action that marked the development of the second half.

In the 66th minute, Rivero was sent off after a strong tackle on Álvaro Fidalgo.

Despite playing with an extra man for more than 25 minutes, América was unable to generate clear danger in the Cruz Azul goal, defended by Kevin Mier, who performed safely.

The team coached by André Jardine showed little offensive power and did not take advantage of the numerical superiority.

Although they tried to take control of the ball, the arrivals were few and far between and lacked precision.

Players such as Julián Quiñones and Diego Valdés were unable to make a difference against a Celeste defense that retreated with order.

For his part, Cruz Azul coach Vicente Sánchez praised the efforts of his players.

“This group has character, knows how to suffer and fight for every ball. We leave with an important advantage, but not a definitive one,” he said at the end of the match.

The second leg between Cruz Azul and América will be played on Sunday, May 18 at 7:15 p.m. at the Ciudad de los Deportes Stadium.

The Celestes will be looking to seal their place in the final of the Clausura 2025.

To advance, América must win by a one-goal margin.
