Cruz Azul, one of the most representative clubs in Liga MX, has decided to reduce its participation in the MLS All-Star Game 2025, prioritizing its competitive schedule. Of the five players initially called up, only Kevin Mier, Willer Ditta and, at the last minute, Ángel Sepúlveda will represent the club in the event, which will be held this July 23 in Austin, Texas.

The most notable absentees are Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Rivero, Erik Lira and Rodolfo Rotondi. Rivero was sidelined due to a rib injury, while Lira and Rotondi were excluded by decision of the coaching staff, who prefer to focus on the upcoming Torneo Apertura 2025 match against León, and the imminent debut in the Leagues Cup.

Rivero has been a key player in Cruz Azul’s scheme.

His absence is due to an injury he recently suffered on matchday 2.

The Uruguayan midfielder is not at 100% physically, so he will stay in Mexico to complete his recovery.

As for Erik Lira and Rodolfo Rotondi, the decision was entirely tactical.

The coaching staff, headed by Nicolás Larcamón, has opted to keep both available and concentrated for the upcoming official matches.

These include the game against Leon and three demanding matches in the group stage of the Leagues Cup:

Seattle Sounders, LA Galaxy and Colorado Rapids.

With the adjustments made, Cruz Azul’s representation is reduced to three players:

Kevin Mier (starting goalkeeper)
Willer Ditta (central defender)
Ángel Sepúlveda (forward), who was called up at the last minute to reinforce the squad in view of the many departures that have affected Liga MX.

This decision not only changes the All-Star Game lineup, but also reflects a clear priority on the part of Cruz Azul towards official competition over media spectacle.

What should the Hispanic fan know?

This decision by Cruz Azul highlights a reality that many teams face:

The dilemma of whether to give up players for a promotional event or to protect their physical condition for key matches in the local and international calendar.

For the U.S. Hispanic fan, this means that while the All-Star Game remains an exciting exhibition, some Mexican clubs will opt to reserve their best players to maintain their performance in official tournaments.
