David Benavidez, undefeated World Boxing Council (WBC) light heavyweight champion, has stepped up his call to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez for a fight between the two. In a recent interview on the Pound 4 Pound podcast, Benavidez stated that a fight with him would be the most lucrative of Canelo’s career and an opportunity for the tapatío to gain respect.
“If Canelo fights me today, it would probably be the most important fight of his career. That would be the biggest payday he would earn in his career,” said David Benavidez. However, Canelo has shown little interest in facing Benavidez, calling him “very disrespectful” and noting that he hasn’t done enough to deserve a fight with him.
New challenges

With Canelo’s refusal, David Benavidez has set his sights on other high-profile opponents.
He is currently considering facing either WBO interim champion Callum Smith or Anthony Yarde.
A win over either of them could bring him closer to a title unification fight against the winner of the trilogy between Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev.

Callum Smith has expressed interest in facing David Benavidez, noting that it would be an exciting fight due to their fighting styles.
Anthony Yarde is also considered a viable option, given his track record in the division.
Possible confrontation with Scull

David Benavidez’s team has also considered a fight against Cuban William Scull, who recently lost to Canelo in a fight that many considered lackluster.
Jose Benavidez Sr., David’s father and trainer, has expressed his desire to face Scull to demonstrate how he should be fought.
However, they have made it clear that they will not go down to 168 pounds, so they invite Scull to move up to 175.
Meanwhile, Canelo Alvarez is preparing for a fight against Terence Crawford, scheduled for September 13, 2025.
This bout has generated great expectation, as Crawford, an undefeated champion in multiple divisions, seeks to consolidate his legacy by facing one of today’s best boxers.
