On June 14, 2025, Minnesota was the scene of a political attack unprecedented in recent U.S. history. Democratic State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were murdered in their Brooklyn Park residence by an individual posing as a police officer.

Authorities issued a lockdown order in Brooklyn Park and advised citizens to verify the identity of anyone presenting themselves as a police officer.
