Tensions between the United States and Venezuela escalated again this September 2025 following a new statement by President Donald Trump, who demanded that the government of Caracas immediately receive prisoners and people held in psychiatric institutions that, according to him, were transferred from Venezuela to U.S. territory.

In a message published on the Truth Social network, Trump affirmed that these were individuals considered dangerous: “We want Venezuela to immediately accept all prisoners and people in psychiatric institutions, including the worst asylums in the world, that Venezuelan ‘leaders’ have forced to move to the United States”. Donald Trump added that “thousands of people have been seriously injured, and even killed, by these ‘monsters’.” And he issued a direct warning: “Get them out of our country now, or the price you will pay will be incalculable!

Diplomatic and military escalation

This episode occurs in the midst of a diplomatic crisis marked by accusations of drug trafficking and clashes in the Caribbean Sea.

Donald Trump reported Friday that the U.S. Navy destroyed a fourth vessel from Venezuela.

Allegedly used to transport drugs to the United States.

Washington maintains its naval fleet deployed in Caribbean waters and has reinforced its military presence with F-35 fighter jets stationed in Puerto Rico.

These actions are justified by the U.S. government as part of its strategy against regional drug trafficking.

From Caracas, however, the narrative is different.

Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López accused the United States of launching a covert offensive:

“It is an undeclared war, and you can see how people, whether or not they are drug traffickers, have been executed in the Caribbean Sea without the right to defend themselves”.

Repercussions for the Hispanic community

For Hispanics living in the United States, especially Venezuelans who have migrated in search of stability, these tensions raise concerns about the impact on immigration policies, visas and asylum applications.

Immigration lawyers warn that a further deterioration in bilateral relations could affect family reunification processes, as well as tighten immigration controls.

At the same time, human rights organizations are calling for vigilance and information on available legal remedies in the event that surveillance measures against Venezuelan citizens in the U.S. are increased.
