The U.S. Motion Picture Academy announced Thursday an agreement to move the Oscar gala from its traditional Dolby Theatre in Hollywood to downtown Los Angeles starting in 2029, just after commemorating the 100th anniversary of the industry’s most coveted awards.

The alliance with entertainment company AEG “makes L.A. LIVE the new home of the Oscar Awards, beginning with the 101st ceremony in 2029,” the Academy said in a statement.

The agreement will be in effect for ten years at the Peacock Theater, where other awards such as the Emmy Awards, the most important international television awards, are also held.

Recently expanded with 370,000 square meters, the new venue “will house red carpet arrivals and activities,” the brief stated.

Following its centennial, this downtown Los Angeles venue will also be the first to host a ceremony that will be broadcast globally via YouTube.

“L.A. LIVE was built to host culture-defining moments, and there is no bigger global stage than the Oscars,” said AEG Chief Revenue Officer Todd Goldstein.

The 99th edition of the film industry’s most important awards will be held next year at the Dolby Theatre and will be broadcast live on ABC, as well as in more than 200 territories around the world, at least until the 100th edition of the Oscars. EFE
