El Salvador is located in a zone of high seismic activity due to the interaction of the Cocos and Caribbean tectonic plates.

Most of the earthquakes come from the Pacific Ocean and occur at great depth, so many are not perceived.

However, others, such as the one registered on June 18, are widely felt.

The last devastating event occurred in 2001, when two earthquakes (magnitudes 7.7 and 6.6) killed more than 1,200 people.
