E-commerce giant Amazon announced Thursday that its Amazon Pharmacy unit will offer Eli Lilly’s new weight loss pill, Foundayo, at kiosks located in some of its primary care clinics in the U.S., in addition to enabling same-day delivery in several areas, especially in the state of California.

The company announced in a statement that availability in kiosks will be possible because the oral drug does not require refrigeration, unlike injectable versions of similar drugs, which “facilitates its storage and direct dispensing after a medical consultation.”

Amazon Pharmacy had already begun distributing GLP-1 class drugs in 2021, but did not offer them at these physical locations due to cold storage requirements.

The company added that approximately half of U.S. customers currently have access to same-day drug deliveries, while the rest receive medications within a maximum of four days.

Same-day delivery now covers 3,000 cities and towns in the country.

On the sidelines, Amazon Pharmacy also processes prescriptions it receives through the direct-to-consumer platform LillyDirect, created by Eli Lilly to streamline access to treatments without traditional intermediaries.

On April 1, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave the green light to Eli Lilly’s Foundayo (orforglipron), an oral weight-loss pill for adults who are obese or overweight.

It is also for people with weight-related medical conditions who prefer to avoid injections.

When used in conjunction with a low-calorie diet and increased physical activity, the drug helps to lose excess body weight and maintain it, the drugmaker said at the time.

Eli Lilly further indicated that during the clinical trials patients lost on average about 12.24 kilos versus about 1 kilo in the placebo group.

This pill is an alternative to other anti-obesity treatments administered by injection, such as Wegovy, developed by Novo Nordisk.

Also, Eli Lilly recently noted that this new weight-loss tablet will be offered to cash-paying patients starting at $149 per month for the lowest dose.

For its part, Amazon began installing automated drug dispensing kiosks last year, offering common drugs, such as antibiotics or asthma inhalers, that patients can pick up after a doctor’s visit.

The company will invest billions of dollars to expand its fast delivery options and plans to extend same-day shipping access to thousands of locations in the United States by the end of 2026. EFE

What is it?

Foundayo (orforglipron) is a prescription drug available in tablet form for adults who are obese or overweight, as well as for people with weight-related medical problems who wish to avoid injections.

When used in conjunction with a low-calorie diet and increased physical activity, it helps to lose excess body weight and maintain it.

The use of Foundayo with other anti GLP-1 receptor drugs is not recommended.

Eli Lilly warned that Foundayo can cause thyroid tumors, including thyroid cancer, and said it is not recommended for use if the person or a family member had a type of thyroid cancer called medullary carcinoma.
