Donald Trump wastes no time. In a press conference from Miami, the president revealed the details of a one-hour “frank” call with Vladimir Putin, where the central topic was not only Ukraine, but how Russia can influence the explosive situation between the United States and Iran.
Trump’s call with Putin in March 2026
President Trump says he had “a very good call” with Russia’s Vladimir Putin on Monday, telling CBS News’ @NikolenDC the two leaders discussed the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Trump got straight to the point: if the Kremlin wants to be a constructive player in the Middle East crisis, it must first close the front in Eastern Europe.
“He wants to help. I told him, ‘You could help more by ending the Ukraine-Russia war.’ That would help more,'” the Republican declared, describing the battle between Putin and Zelenski as a situation of “tremendous hatred” that seems to have no end.
Trump asserted that the Russian president was “very impressed” with the U.S. attack with Iran “because no one has ever seen anything like it.”
The U.S. president said it was “a very good call,” although Putin has expressed Moscow’s “unwavering” support for Tehran following the election of Mojtaba Khamenei as successor to his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, while Trump has deemed it “unacceptable.”
“We were talking about Ukraine, which is a battle that never ends, and look, there is tremendous hatred between President Putin and President (Volodymir) Zelensky (of Ukraine). They can’t seem to get their heads together. But I think it was a positive call on that issue,” Trump added.
The Kremlin’s version
Trump says Putin was “very impressed” with the US bombing of Iran, and America would have been nuked months ago if he didn’t bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities.

From Moscow, advisor Yuri Ushakov confirmed that Putin raised “variants” for a diplomatic settlement with Tehran, the fruit of his recent talks with Iranian President Masud Pezeshkian.
However, the gap remains huge: while Russia seeks a political way out for its ally, Trump already called the Khamenei succession “unacceptable.”
Despite reports suggesting that Russia has passed military intelligence to Iran in the past week – information that Trump dismissed – the US president insisted that the conversation was “positive.”
Will Trump get Putin to let go of Ukraine in exchange for influencing Iran’s fate?
The global chessboard is moving faster than ever.
