The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) informed on Wednesday that relatives of Nemesio Oceguera Cervantes, alias El Mencho, who died after a military operation in Tapalpa, in the western state of Jalisco, formally requested the delivery of his mortal remains, while investigations continue into the events in which he died.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office received a document presented by a person who claimed to be the legal representative of the deceased’s relatives, requesting the delivery of the body.

The FGR stated that “the social representative exhausted all protocol procedures necessary to be able to formalize its delivery”.

Rubén Nemesio Oceguera, alias El Mencho, leader of the Jalisco Cartel – New Generation ( CJNG), one of Mexico’s most powerful criminal organizations, was killed on February 22 following a security operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, in which two people were also arrested.

The FGR informed that the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, attached to the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime (Femdo), charged Andrés ‘N’ and Genaro ‘N’, arrested last Sunday, for their probable participation in the crimes of aggravated carrying of weapons and carrying attachments and magazines for the exclusive use of the Armed Forces.

As a result, a control judge ordered the two suspects to be remanded in custody after the presentation of the corresponding evidence.

The defense requested an extension of the constitutional term, so the detainees were transferred to the Federal Center for Social Readaptation number 1 ‘Altiplano’, in Almoloya de Juárez, State of Mexico, while their legal situation is defined.

Oseguera Cervantes was killed during an operation in Tapalpa, 130 kilometers south of Guadalajara, Jalisco’s capital.

Alias El Mencho, 59, was one of the most wanted criminals by Mexican and US authorities, with a million-dollar reward for information leading to his capture.

Washington accused him of leading a “reign of terror” in Mexico and destroying “countless lives” by trafficking fentanyl, and offered up to $15 million for information leading to his arrest or conviction.

Under his command, the CJNG expanded its presence in Mexico and strengthened drug trafficking routes, including fentanyl to the United States, placing it among the most wanted drug traffickers in both countries.
