Former MLS player Aaron Boupendza dies after fall in China

International soccer is mourning the tragic death of Gabonese striker Aaron Boupendza, who died on April 16, 2025 at the age of 28 after falling from the eleventh floor of a building in Hangzhou, China.

Boupendza joined FC Cincinnati in 2023 as a Designated Player from Al-Shabab FC of Saudi Arabia. He played in the Major League Soccer (MLS) and during his time he made 35 appearances and scored nine goals, playing a key role in winning the Supporters’ Shield in 2023. Prior to his time in MLS, Aaron Boupendza shined in the Turkish Süper Lig with Hatayspor, where he was the top scorer in the 2020/21 season with 22 goals.

Striker Aaron Boupendza had signed for Chinese Super League side Zhejiang FC in early 2025, where he had already scored four goals in six games.

His absence from training prior to the match against Meizhou Hakka alerted the club, which later confirmed his death.

The Chinese authorities have launched an investigation to determine whether the fall was accidental, a suicide or the result of a wrongful act.

At this time, the cause of the death of Aaron Boupendza has not been officially confirmed.

The president of Gabon, Brice Oligui Nguema, expressed his sorrow for the loss of “a talented striker who honored Gabonese soccer” and whose memory will live on among fans.

Teammates such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mario Lemina also paid tribute to Aaron Boupendza on social media, highlighting his talent, charisma and commitment to the national jersey.

With 35 appearances and eight goals for the Gabon national team, Aaron Boupendza left a significant mark on African and international soccer, being remembered as a symbol of pride for his country.
