In soccer, the goalkeeper’s role is usually limited to defending his goal. However, some goalkeepers have broken all the rules, becoming not only stars under the goalposts, but also historic goal scorers.

1. Rogerio Ceni

Considered the highest-scoring goalkeeper in history, Brazilian Rogerio Ceni spent his entire career at São Paulo FC, where he was also an idol and captain.
A specialist in free kicks and penalty kicks, he scored 131 goals between 1992 and 2015, a record that remains unbeaten to this day.
2. José Luis Chilavert

José Luis Chilavert was an icon of South American soccer in the 1990s.
He played for clubs such as Vélez Sarsfield and Racing, and scored 62 goals, several of them with the Paraguayan national team.
He was the first goalkeeper to score a hat-trick in an official match.
3. Johnny Vegas

Peruvian Johnny Vegas, active in the 2000s, scored most of his goals (45 in total) from the penalty spot.
He played in clubs such as Sport Boys and Unión Huaral.
Although his style was discreet, his effectiveness placed him among the best goal scorers.
4. René Higuita

Famous for his eccentric style and the “scorpion”, René Higuita was a legend of Atlético Nacional and the Colombian national team.
His goals came mainly from free kicks and penalty kicks, 43 in total.
5. Jorge Campos

Jorge Campos is one of the most charismatic goalkeepers in Mexican soccer.
He alternated his role as goalkeeper with that of striker in clubs such as Pumas and Atlante.
His 41 goals make him unique among his peers.

Bulgarian goalkeeper Dimitar Ivankov scored most of his goals (42) in the Turkish league and with Levski Sofia.
A specialist in penalty kicks, he left his mark as one of the most accurate penalty kick takers.
7. Fernando Patterson

A naturalized Guatemalan, Fernando Patterson (Costa Rica) had a long career in Central America.
He played a leading role in teams such as Xelajú and Municipal.
He scored 35 goals during his career.
8. Misael Alfaro

Salvadoran soccer star in the 90’s and 2000.
Misael Alfaro scored his goals (31) mainly in local tournaments with teams such as Alianza and Águila.
9. Hans-Jörg Butt

Hans-Jörg Butt excelled in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen.
All of this German goalkeeper’s goals (29) were from penalty kicks and he managed to score in the Champions League.
10. Vincent Enyeama

A historic goalkeeper for Nigeria, Vincent Enyeama scored his 24 goals mainly in African leagues and in Israel.
He was also a key player in African Cups and World Cups.
