Tony Blanco Died a Hero—He Saved a Life in the Jet Set Collapse

Former Dominican baseball player Tony Blanco, who played in the Major Leagues with the Washington Nationals, died a hero’s death after saving his friend Esteban Germán during the collapse of the roof of the Jet Set club in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The tragic event occurred in the early morning hours of Tuesday, April 8, 2025, during a crowded party at the renowned establishment. According to the testimony of Germán, also a former MLB player, he had returned from the restroom and was seated at his table when Blanco, upon realizing that the ceiling was about to collapse, pushed him hard to get him out of harm’s way.

Seconds later, the structure collapsed on Tony Blanco, killing him instantly.

His heroic action saved his partner’s life.

“Tony saved my life. If he didn’t push me, I wouldn’t be telling this,” German told MLB’s Dominican Media in tears.

The story quickly went viral on social networks, where thousands of fans, players and family members highlighted the brave and selfless act of the former player.

Horrible tragedy

The collapse of the Jet Set club left 113 people dead and dozens injured.

The victims also include Octavio Dotel, World Series champion with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011, and Nelsy Cruz, sister of renowned baseball player Nelson Cruz.

The tragedy occurred during a performance by merenguero Rubby Pérez, who also died.

His representative, Enrique Paulino, said it all happened very fast. “It looked like an earthquake,” he said.

Emergency crews continue to remove debris in hopes of finding survivors.

Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the Emergency Operations Center (COE), assured that “we will work tirelessly” in the rescue efforts.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred issued a statement deeply regretting the tragedy.

“Major League Baseball is devastated by the loss of Tony Blanco, Octavio Dotel, Nelsy Cruz and all the victims. The connection between MLB and the Dominican Republic runs deep.

Tony Blanco, 43, played in 56 games for the Washington Nationals in 2005.

Although he spent most of his career in the minor leagues and in Japan, his legacy as an athlete and as a human being will remain in baseball’s collective memory.

His son, Tony Blanco Jr., is part of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ developmental system, ensuring that the Blanco name will continue to resonate on the diamond.
