The Latino community of Oceanside, in San Diego County, California, is experiencing moments of deep sorrow after the sudden death of a Hispanic man who lost his life on Monday night.
Although the family had already reported that the deceased was a beloved uncle, described as kind, hardworking and loving, authorities have now confirmed that the tragedy was the result of a vehicular accident where the man was hit while walking.
Hispanic run over in Oceanside
According to information from the Oceanside Police Department, the accident occurred at about 6:46 p.m. near the intersection of Mission Avenue and Francesca Drive, an area heavily traveled by both vehicles and pedestrians.
Authorities said the victim – an adult Oceanside resident – was struck by a Chevrolet Tahoe traveling eastbound on Mission Avenue.
Police and paramedics quickly arrived at the scene and attempted to provide emergency care, but the man died at the scene due to the severity of his injuries.
So far, her name and age have not been publicly disclosed, pending formal notification of the entire family.
No escape; driver cooperated with authorities
The Oceanside Police Department confirmed that the driver of the Tahoe remained at the scene of the accident and cooperated at all times with investigators.
In addition, officials indicated that, with the information available at this time, it is not believed that drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
The investigation remains open and, as in all fatal hit-and-run cases, the traffic unit is gathering evidence, testimony and security video.
Authorities asked anyone who witnessed the accident or has relevant information to contact traffic investigator Ibrahim Serdah at 760-435-4769.
Funeral assistance requested
The victim’s family described the man as hard-working, loving and central to their family.
His sudden death -with no previous illness or warning signs- has left an irreplaceable void.
“He was a kind, hardworking and loving person,” the family wrote on social media, noting that his unexpected departure has been devastating: “His sudden departure has left an irreplaceable void.”
As with many unexpected deaths, the family is facing funeral costs that can exceed $8,000 in California.
Friends and loved ones have started a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to help cover the costs of the service, burial or cremation.
“We ask for the support of friends, family and anyone touched by his story to give him the farewell he deserves,” the family expressed. They also deeply appreciated the prayers, words of encouragement and expressions of solidarity.
Oceanside and the importance of pedestrian road safety
The accident also highlights a reality affecting many California cities: the increase in crashes involving pedestrians.
In heavily trafficked areas such as Mission Avenue, authorities often urge caution for both drivers and walkers, especially after dark when visibility decreases.
Although the investigation continues, the case is a reminder of the importance of road safety and reporting any relevant information to investigators.
