Mexican actor Gael García Bernal continues his career as a director with his third feature film ‘Hombre al agua’, which will feature the participation of Esmeralda Pimentel, Débora Nascimento and Manuel García-Rulfo in a shoot that will take place between Mexico and Cuba, as revealed Monday by the production company La Corriente del Golfo.

The film, co-written by the director of ‘Déficit’ (2007) and Argentine playwright Mariano Pensotti, narrates an introspective drama “that combines humor and dreamlike atmospheres to delve into a universe of manipulation and the falsity of social masks”.

In addition, the production company, founded by the Mexican film duo of García Bernal and Diego Luna, assured that the cast will also include Natalia Oreiro (‘La mujer de la fila’), Anna Díaz (‘La cocina’) and Jorge Salinas, who was part of the cast of ‘Amores perros’ (2000), the film that catapulted García Bernal into the film industry at the beginning of the century.

García Bernal, originally from the Mexican state of Jalisco, will also be part of the cast of ‘Hombre al agua’, although the role he will play in the production has not been revealed.

Gulf Stream reported that the film will be represented internationally by The Pool Films, which will begin sales at the European Film Marke in Berlin, “marking the beginning of its global tour and shaping up to be one of the titles to watch heading into the 2026 festival season.”

“We are truly excited about ‘Hombre al Agua’, a visually beautiful film with original humor and great depth. Joining forces with The Pool Films is one of the first steps the film is taking on its way to being shown to the world,” said Fernanda de la Peza, part of the La Corriente del Golfo team.

García Bernal, Golden Globe winner for his performance in the series ‘Mozart in the Jungle’ debuted as a director with ‘Déficit’ (2007) to later make ‘Chicuarotes’ (2019), which had its world premiere at the 72nd edition of the Cannes International Film Festival, reported Agencia EFE.
