The humanitarian parole program has become a key option for people facing humanitarian crises in their home countries. By 2025, the United States maintains this policy as a resource for those who need to enter temporarily for urgent reasons.

Although it does not grant permanent immigration status, humanitarian parole allows you to remain legally in the U.S. for a certain period of time.

What is humanitarian parole?

Humanitarian parole is a temporary authorization that allows individuals to enter the United States for reasons of emergency or significant public benefit.

It is not a visa or a direct path to residency, but it offers temporary protection in situations of extreme vulnerability.

This permit can be granted by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and is designed for people who do not qualify for other types of legal entry, but face exceptional situations such as:

Risk of persecution or violence.

Serious medical emergencies.

Urgent family reunification.

Displacement due to armed conflict or natural disasters.

Who qualifies in 2025?

For 2025, humanitarian parole remains available primarily for citizens of countries with active humanitarian crises, such as Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti and Nicaragua, among others.

However, anyone can apply if they demonstrate a compelling humanitarian need.

Key criteria include:

Demonstrate that the situation represents a serious or urgent danger.

Have a U.S. sponsor who is committed to providing financial support during the stay.

Not represent a threat to national or public security.

It is important to note that each application is evaluated on an individual and discretionary basis. There is no guarantee of approval.

The application process begins with the sponsor, who must file Form I-134A (Online Application for Sponsorship) through the USCIS portal.

Once the sponsor is approved, the beneficiary receives instructions on how to continue with the process, which may include:

Background and security checks.

Presentation of personal and medical documents.

Scheduling of travel and arrival at an authorized port of entry.

Most applicants, if approved, receive a temporary stay permit for up to two years, with the possibility of applying for a work permit.

Limitations and caveats

Humanitarian parole is not a direct path to permanent residence or asylum.

Nor does it guarantee an automatic extension upon expiration of the permit.

At the end of the authorized period, the beneficiary must leave the country or find another legal way to stay.

In addition, the policy can change

It is therefore crucial to stay informed through official sources such as USCIS.gov.
