Inter Miami is going through a key moment of transition after winning the first MLS title in its history with a 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps on December 6 at Chase Stadium. With the celebration behind them, the South Florida club is now focusing on a major challenge: rebuilding its squad and finding a new ideal partner for Lionel Messi.

The franchise’s priority is to complete its second Designated Player quota, a key figure in MLS that allows the signing of high-value players without affecting the salary cap. This need arose after the announced departure of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, who had already anticipated that 2025 would be their last year with the Rosanegros.

One of the available slots was already filled when Inter Miami exercised its option to buy Rodrigo de Paul, who arrived on loan from Atlético de Madrid.

The Argentine midfielder is emerging as a central player in the sporting project around Messi.

In contrast, the club was unable to make progress in other areas.

Club León of Liga MX rejected an offer for Uruguayan midfielder Nicolás Fonseca.

He opted to loan him to Real Oviedo of Spain, considering the U.S. team’s proposal unattractive.

Among the most relevant decisions, Inter Miami extended Luis Suarez ‘s contract for one year.

This is with a base salary of $1.5 million, which can be doubled with incentives.

Although he does not occupy a Designated Player spot, he became one of the highest paid players in MLS under that scheme.

The contract of fullback Ian Fray was also extended until 2029.

In addition, the signing of Spaniard Sergio Reguilón, who will replace Jordi Alba, was announced.

The defender signed with Inter Miami until 2027, with an option for an additional year.

In SuperDraft 2026, the club selected five college players, bolstering defense, midfield and attack with forward bets.

The most delicate situation for Inter Miami is that of Tadeo Allende.

Playoffs figure with nine goals, an all-time MLS record.

The player is due to report on January 2.

But Celta Vigo is demanding US$10 million for his loan, refusing to extend the loan.

The club also confirmed that it will not renew the loan of Ecuadorian Allen Obando, and the future of Argentine defender Tomás Avilés, who occupies a U-22 quota, remains unresolved.
