Saul Canelo Alvarez, the multi-champion Mexican boxer, has confirmed that his retirement from the ring is closer than ever, and at 34 years of age, the 34-year-old is preparing for his 67th professional fight on May 3, 2025 against Cuban William Scull, at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The fight is part of the million-dollar contract signed by Canelo with Sheikh Turki Alalshikh, president of the Saudi Arabian General Entertainment Authority. According to official sources, the agreement contemplates four fights, with an option for a fifth, as part of a series of international events aimed at positioning the country as a new global boxing center.
A calculated withdrawal

In statements to media outlets such as TMZ Sports, Canelo Alvarez was clear:
“I’ve done everything in boxing. I fought the best, won titles in different divisions and was considered the best pound-for-pound.”
It's not just about money, it's also about enjoying the journey

Although he has not announced an exact date for his retirement or whether it will be in 2025, Canelo Alvarez estimated that he will hang up his gloves at the age of 37 or 38.
This is as long as he meets the agreed objectives and continues to enjoy the sport.
“I still like to train, I still like to fight. But I’m also thinking about what comes next,” added the unified super middleweight champion.
What comes after Scull

If he beats Scull in May, Canelo Alvarez could face undefeated Terence Crawford on September 13, 2025, in one of the most anticipated fights of the year.
Also on the table are possible opponents such as Dmitry Bivol -for a rematch- and David Benavidez, who currently holds the WBC title after Bivol’s departure from that category.
Canelo Alvarez continues to be one of the most important icons for Hispanics in the United States.
Both for his sporting legacy and his role as a model of self-improvement and discipline.
