Singer Jenni Rivera will be inducted into the Long Beach City College (LBCC) Hall of Fame, the academic institution in the city where she was born, which will recognize her contributions to music, as well as her tireless work as an activist, advocate for immigrants and the Latino community in the United States.

The posthumous tribute to the ‘Diva de la Banda’ will take place on September 18, less than three months before the thirteenth anniversary of her death.

The recognition is part of the annual event organized by the Long Beach City College Foundation, which celebrates distinguished alumni and city residents who have made a significant impact in their respective professions.

Born in Long Beach (California) and died after a plane crash in December 2012 in Mexico at the age of 43, Rivera received nine consecutive Premio Lo Nuestro, two Billboard, 22 Latin Music Billboard and four Latin Grammy nominations throughout her career.

The award will be received by her daughter, Jacqie Rivera, who currently heads Jenni Rivera Enterprises, the company that groups and manages the singer’s legacy.

“My mom was always a determined and dreamy woman. Her college education was an important part of her early life, a place where she believed anything was possible,” the singer’s daughter said in a statement.

He added that the recognition “is a reminder” that the story of the ‘Diva de la Banda’ continues to inspire many people to keep fighting for their dreams, “no matter where they come from.”

LBCC Superintendent Mike Muñoz said Jenni Rivera “continues to inspire” generations.

“She (Jenni Rivera) taught us what it means to overcome challenges, stay true to our roots and use success as a platform to uplift others. Jenni is a powerful role model. Her legacy reminds us that our voices matter, our stories matter,” added Muñoz, reported Agencia EFE.
