On March 27, 2025, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles denied the early release request of Yolanda Saldívar, who was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of iconic singer Selena Quintanilla in 1995.

The decision was made due to the brutality of the crime and the ongoing risk she poses to public safety, according to the news agency Efe.

Reasons for the Decision

According to the official statement, the Board argued that the crime committed by Saldívar exhibits “elements of brutality, violence, and aggressive behavior,” as well as reflecting a “conscious disregard for life.”

The Board concluded that, due to these factors, Saldívar’s release would pose a risk to public safety, which is why her request was denied.

According to Telemundo Corpus Christi, the Texas Board’s decision comes just four days before the 30th anniversary of Selena’s murder.

“Saldívar, 64, was required to serve 30 years before being considered for parole after being sentenced in 1995,” reported the Hispanic media outlet on its website.

Yolanda Saldívar was the president of Selena’s fan club and the manager of the singer’s boutiques.

On March 31, 1995, after it was discovered that Saldívar had embezzled more than $30,000 from Selena’s businesses, the singer confronted her at a motel in Corpus Christi, Texas.

During the confrontation, Saldívar fatally shot Selena in the right shoulder. Although the convicted claimed that the shooting was accidental, the jury found her guilty of first-degree murder.
