Killed by lightning! Tragedy in sport after death of athlete Audun Grønvold

Audun Grønvold, a beloved 49-year-old skier, was struck by lightning on a family vacation.

Prominent Norwegian skier Audun Grønvold died on July 16, 2025 at the age of 49, five days after being struck by lightning while staying with his family in a cabin.

His wife, Kristin Tandberg Haugsjå, related that the accident occurred on Saturday, July 12, and although he was rushed to the hospital, he did not survive the serious injuries sustained; today the sports community is in mourning.

Born on February 28, 1976 in Hamar, Norway, Grønvold began his career in alpine skiing between 1993 and 2004. He earned his first World Cup podium in the Sierra Nevada in 1999.

In 2004, he reinvented himself as a ski cross pioneer in his country, achieving:

Bronze at the 2005 Ski Cross World Championship in Ruka.

Winner of the Ski Cross World Cup in 2007.

Bronze at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games in the same discipline.

After his retirement in 2010, he worked as a national team coach, commentator for public television NRK and board member of the Norwegian Ski Federation.

The tragedy occurred while Grønvold was enjoying a vacation with his family in a cabin in the middle of a thunderstorm.

He was struck by lightning and, although he was immediately treated, he died Tuesday night due to complications associated with the impact.

His wife, visibly devastated, posted on social networks:

“Audun, my great love and best friend for 20 years…you left us today. We will carry you always in our hearts. Your loss is huge,” he wrote.

The Norwegian Ski Federation mourned his departure:

“Norwegian skiing has lost a very prominent figure… There will be a big void left.”

Former teammates such as Kjetil André Aamodt and his coach Marius Arnesen remembered him as an “exceptional athlete” and a person of great charisma.

In addition, the FIS group highlighted its pivotal role in the development of ski cross in Norway, both on piste and behind the scenes.
