Actor Wagner Moura said that films about Brazil’s dictatorship must continue to be made, after making history as the first Brazilian actor to win the Golden Globe for best actor in a drama, for ‘The Secret Agent’.
“The dictatorship continues to be an open wound in our daily lives,” the interpreter told EFE during his visit to the winners’ hall of the 83rd edition of these awards.
“It happened just 50 years ago, and recently, from 2018 to 2022, we had a far-right president in Brazil, a fascist who is the physical embodiment of the echoes of dictatorship,” said Moura referring to former president Jair Bolsonaro, who took office in 2019.
“So the dictatorship is still very present in everyday Brazilian life. That’s why we have to keep making films about it,” added the actor, who gained international recognition thanks to his portrayal of Pablo Escobar in the Netflix series ‘Narcos’ (2015).
In ‘The Secret Agent’, set during Brazil’s military dictatorship of the 1970s, Moura brings to life Marcelo, a technology expert with a mysterious past who seeks to reunite with his son in Recife.
The film was also crowned Best Foreign Language Film, reported Agencia EFE.
