The name of Christian Nodal, one of the most successful singers in regional Mexican music, has once again been at the center of controversy.

This time, it is not about his personal life or his international tours, but about a legal process that could have important legal consequences for both him and his parents, Jesús González and Silvia Nodal.

The controversy dates back to November 2021, when Nodal and his parents filed a civil lawsuit against Universal Music, claiming that the label did not have rights to several of his songs.

On that occasion, the family claimed to have certifications of contracts proving the ownership of the musical works, documents that were submitted as evidence in the litigation.

However, Universal Music questioned the authenticity of these contracts and proceeded to file a criminal complaint with the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), arguing that the documents were apocryphal and sought to appropriate songs that legally belonged to the company’s catalog.

According to statements made by Universal Music’s attorney, Ulrich Richter Morales, specialized experts from the FGR carried out graphoscopy and documentoscopy reports, which concluded that the signatures on the 32 contracts presented by the Nodal family did not correspond to the notary Luis Fernando Ruibal Coker, who appeared as the notary on the documents.

The notary himself, in his statement, denied having provided services to the Nodals or their legal representatives, which reinforced the suspicion that the documents were forged. These findings led to the filing of the case before a Federal Control Judge, who set the initial hearing for September 22, 2025 at the Federal Criminal Justice Center of the Reclusorio Oriente, in Mexico City.

At the hearing, which will mark the formal beginning of the process, both Universal Music’s legal advisors and the members of the Nodal family must appear. According to Richter Morales, the judge could decide to order the prosecution if he considers the evidence presented by the Prosecutor’s Office to be sufficient.

In this scenario, precautionary measures ranging from the prohibition to leave the country, the surrender of the passport or even justified preventive detention are contemplated, depending on the assessment of the procedural risk.

This legal process comes at a time when Christian Nodal continues with an ascending international career, marked by tours in America and Europe, as well as multiple collaborations with world-class artists. However, the case with Universal Music could affect his public image and open a new chapter in the complex relationship between artists and record labels in the field of copyright and the music industry.

For the time being, neither Nodal nor his parents have issued public statements about the scheduled hearing. Expectations about the case are high, as it not only involves the singer of Adiós Amor, but also brings to the table sensitive issues such as intellectual property, the validity of contracts and transparency in the music industry.
