Lionel Messi once again wrote his name in the history of world soccer. Although he was not the star of the scoreline in Inter Miami’s victory over New York City FC, he was the statistical protagonist of the night: he became the player with the most assists in history, a global record that consolidates him as the best playmaker the sport has ever seen.
The Argentinean reached 405 official assists, surpassing the 404 of the legendary Ferenc Puskás, with whom he was tied. Lionel Messi achieved this milestone in his 2025th MLS season, adding it to a list of records that no other player has reached: maximum collective titles, most individual awards and unreachable numbers in both club and national team. This record, moreover, comes in the final stretch of his career and in a year where his influence continues to be decisive, not necessarily with goals – as in previous eras – but with his reading of the game, his ability to open up defenses and his pinpoint accuracy.
Inter Miami and its first MLS final
On the competitive front, Inter Miami had a memorable night, defeating New York City FC 5-1 to win the Eastern Conference for the first time since its founding.
With this, the team led by Javier Mascherano secured its ticket to MLS Cup 2025, where it will face Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
The star of the match was Tadeo Allende, scorer of three goals that led to the victory.
Telasco Segovia and Mateo Silvetti completed the scoring.

The duel was tense and there was a brawl in the 22nd minute, but it did not escalate.
When New York City scored in the 37th minute, it looked like history could be complicated, but the pink team ended up sweeping the game in the second half, boosted by the support of its fans at Chase Stadium.
