The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, suggested Wednesday that he is in negotiations with the Government of Argentina to accept migrants from other countries deported from U.S. territory, although he stressed that there is no agreement in this regard.

“We have had conversations about countries willing to accept third country nationals, but we do not have any agreement or anything concrete. I know it has been the subject of leaks to the media, and sometimes these leaks have malicious intentions, but without a doubt, Argentina is a great partner in all aspects,” he said at a press conference.

According to The New York Times in January, Donald Trump’s administration and Javier Milei’s government are in advanced talks for such an immigration pact.

The agreement, as reported by the newspaper, would allow the U.S. to send foreign nationals to Argentina, where they would be offered the possibility of returning to their countries of origin.

This is not the first time that the U.S. Administration has resorted to deportation agreements with third countries, as this is one of the avenues that allows it to fulfill Trump’s promises to approve mass removals.

“Argentina is a great partner. We have enormous confidence in our relationship with President Milei and his team, and he will always act in the best interests of the Argentine people, and in the national interest of this country,” the head of U.S. diplomacy stressed.

With this agreement, Milei would strengthen ties with the United States, despite the problems that this decision to receive deported immigrants from Washington could cause in domestic politics.

Marco Rubio made these statements after holding a ministerial meeting on critical minerals in Washington, attended by representatives from more than 50 countries with the aim of strengthening mineral supply chains and reducing dependence on China in this area.

Asked about Argentina’s role in these efforts, Marco Rubio assured that the Latin American country’s geographic location, geology and processing expertise make it a “key partner” and a “world leader” in this field.

“Argentina has the capacity, from a natural resource standpoint, to be a key partner in critical minerals, not just for the United States, but for the entire world. It also has expertise in processing, which I think will also be vitally important,” the secretary said.
