Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey accused Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) of “killing people” after a shooting in which a woman – identified as a white U.S. citizen – was killed during a raid in Minnesota, and demanded that the agents “get the fuck out”.

“They are not here to cause security in this city. What they are doing is not providing security for the United States. What they are doing is causing chaos and distrust. They are separating families, they are sowing chaos in our cities and, in this case, they are literally killing people,” he denounced in a press conference.

Minneapolis Mayor Accuses ICE

The Democratic mayor of Minneapolis dismissed as “bullshit” and “garbage” the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) claim that agents shot the 37-year-old woman as an act of self-defense during a protest against increased immigration raids in Minnesota.

The woman shot was white, middle-aged and was not the target of any operation, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said at the conference, while Minnesota Senator Tina Smith noted on her social media that the victim was “apparently” an “American citizen.”

“There is nothing to indicate that this woman was the target of any law enforcement activity or operation. This woman was in her car and it appears that she was blocking the street because of the presence of officers, which obviously has been happening, not just in Minneapolis, but all over the country,” O’Hara commented.

Moments earlier, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem accused the woman of “an act of domestic terrorism” for driving her vehicle into the midst of the officers and that they acted in “self-defense,” but the mayor noted that this was “an officer recklessly using his power, resulting in death.”

“I have a message for ICE. ICE, get the fuck out of Minneapolis. We don’t want you here,” exclaimed Jacob Frey.

U.S. woman shot by ICE

The event occurred as ICE officers conducted an operation in Minneapolis, Minnesota’s largest city, where DHS reported the cumulative detention of more than 1,000 migrants, some from Ecuador, Mexico and El Salvador, including more than 150 on Monday, the largest immigration operation so far this year.

Frey considered “garbage” the version of officials such as Tricia McLaughlin, deputy secretary of DHS, who said the woman was “a violent troublemaker who used her vehicle as a weapon, attempting to run over the officers in an attempt to kill them.”

“I myself saw a video in which the shots were fired while I was driving the car away from them. What I can tell you is that the narrative that this happened in self-defense is garbage,” the mayor maintained.

The events are reminiscent of the 2020 death of African-American George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis, which sparked massive protests in the country against racism and police brutality.
