The New Jersey Department of Health has issued a health alert after confirming that a person infected with measles attended the Shakira concert on May 15 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

This event, part of the “Women Don’t Cry Anymore” tour, brought together more than 80,000 people with resounding success, but no one expected the health alert to happen days later.

The infected person, an out-of-state resident, was present at the stadium between 7:30 p.m. on May 15 and 1:00 a.m. the following day, the period covering the duration of the show.

Since measles is highly contagious and is transmitted through the air via saliva droplets, authorities fear that there was massive exposure to the virus during the event.

Measles is an extremely contagious viral disease that is spread through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks.

Symptoms usually appear 10 to 14 days after exposure and include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and rash. In severe cases, it can cause complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis and even death.

Recommendations for attendees

Health authorities are urging all concert attendees who are not vaccinated or have not previously had measles to be on the lookout for symptoms until June 6.

In case of symptoms compatible with the disease, it is recommended to contact a health professional before going to a medical center, in order to avoid the spread of the virus.

Context of the outbreak in the United States

Since March 2025, the United States has experienced a significant increase in measles cases, with Texas as the epicenter of the outbreak.

To date, more than 200 cases have been reported in at least nine states. This resurgence is attributed in part to declining vaccination rates in some communities.

The MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps and rubella, is highly effective and safe.

It is recommended that all children receive two doses of the vaccine, and that adults make sure they are up to date with their vaccination schedule, especially if they plan to attend large events or travel abroad.
