Lionel Messi, one of the most influential soccer players in history, spoke again about the impact of his arrival at Inter Miami and the evolution he has seen in North American soccer.
In a recent interview for the official MLS platform on Apple TV, the Argentine captain assured that the growth of soccer in Mexico, the United States and Canada is “undeniable” and that the region is experiencing a historic moment one year away from the 2026 World Cup.
Mexico: a consolidated market that continues to surprise

Messi made it clear that he already knew the enormous passion of the fans in Mexico, as well as the strength of Liga MX.
A competition that has shown economic stability, high sporting level and great international presence.
“I always knew about the passion in Mexico. Liga MX is strong, with great teams and players,” Messi said.
It has always been a very competitive league

His experience facing Mexican clubs in the Leagues Cup, a tournament that since its inception has united MLS and Liga MX teams, has given him first-hand knowledge of the level of Mexican soccer.
U.S. and Canada surprise world champion

Although Messi already had references to the Mexican soccer environment, he confessed that what surprised him most was the growing passion in the United States and Canada.
Since his arrival at Inter Miami in 2023, the Argentine has visited stadiums in both countries and claims that the fan base has grown significantly.
“I was surprised by the fans in the United States and Canada. People live soccer with passion and enjoy the spectacle very much,” he said.
In 2024 and 2025, several MLS teams opened or renovated soccer-specific stadiums, demonstrating continued investment in the sport.
Unprecedented momentum towards the 2026 World Cup

Messi believes the region is better prepared than ever to host the World Cup.
He highlights the infrastructure, logistics and organizational capacity of the three countries.
“The U.S. is ready to do something extraordinary at the World Cup. It will be an event that lives up to what soccer represents,” he said.
Fans, investment in stadiums and the growth of leagues such as MLS and Liga MX have created an ideal environment for the 2026 World Cup to be the biggest and best attended in history.
