Netflix presented this Thursday its catalog of Mexican premieres for 2026, including ‘Mal de amores’, an adaptation in series format of the novel of the same name by Mexican writer Ángeles Mastretta, as well as ‘Santita’, the first title of this streaming platform starring actor Gael García Bernal.
Productions are also tied to the national context of the 2026 World Cup. With the stellar performance of Diego Luna in the film ‘Mexico 86’, the moment in which the country won the hosting of this great sporting event in 1986 will be remembered, in which Diego Maradona also consolidated some of his historic goals.
At its annual ‘What’s Next’ event, Netflix also screened the behind-the-scenes of one of its first major productions at Mexico’s Churubusco Studios with the film ‘Against the Hurricane’, which documents the story of two brothers struggling to survive the Category 5 hurricane Otis, a real-life catastrophe that occurred in the Mexican state of Guerrero on October 24, 2023.

The first images of the series ‘No tengo miedo’ (I’m not afraid), directed by Ernesto Contreras, which is also set during the 1986 World Cup and brings the novel of the same name by Italian author Niccolò Ammaniti to the present day, were also shown.
In addition to the adaptation of Mastretta and Ammaniti’s work, ‘El círculo’ will be another production in series format that will bring back the novel ‘Los corruptores’ (2013), by Jorge Zepeda Patterson, which will also feature the participation of multi-award winning Raúl Briones (‘La cocina’).
Among the most anticipated premieres are the documentary on Mexican boxer Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez, the platform’s first live event in Latin America, ‘Supernova: Genesis’, and the reality competition ‘Physical Ability 100: Mexico’.
Another promising Mexican production in the documentary genre is ‘Un hijo propio’ by Chilean Maite Alberdi, recognized for ‘La memoria infinita’ (2023) and ‘El agente topo’ (2020). In addition, this piece by the director will have its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival, to be held from February 12-22.

Also added to the list of screenings were ‘La captura’, the feature film starring Alfonso Herrera and directed by Chava Cartas, who last year made ‘Contraataque’ the most popular Mexican action film on Netflix, as well as the series ‘La ley de Alicia’, starring Fernanda Castillo, and ‘El otro padre’, starring Manolo Cardona, Erik Hayser and Silvia Navarro.
Netflix’s bet on the Mexican audiovisual industry between 2025 and 2028 was reflected in an investment of US$1 billion, reported Agencia EFE.
