The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) called on U.S. authorities on Monday for an “immediate and exhaustive” investigation to clarify the causes of the death of a Mexican national in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody at a processing center in the state of California.

In a press release, the Mexican government agency called for an investigation into the “regrettable” death of the Mexican national in order to “determine responsibilities and ensure that such events are not repeated”.

According to the information, the Mexican national died at the Adelanto Processing Center in California, in ICE custody, without his identity or the cause of death having been revealed at this time.

Following this event, the Foreign Ministry requested “detailed information” from the United States, such as medical records and custody reports.

Likewise, the Mexican Consulate in the Californian city of San Bernardino activated the consular assistance protocols to accompany “permanently” the family of the deceased, with whom they contacted to express their condolences and offer legal assistance, as well as support with the necessary steps for the repatriation of his remains.

“Attention to these types of situations and the establishment of ways to resolve them are a priority for the Government of Mexico. The Foreign Ministry will formally request an investigation into the systemic conditions that have led to such unfortunate events as this one,” concluded the government agency.

The number of Mexicans who died in ICE detention last year was seven, the highest number since the immigration agency was created, according to local media in Mexico.

ICE is pursuing an aggressive policy of detentions and deportations that has led to protests and clashes with immigrant advocates in various parts of the country.
