Mexico will face Suriname this Wednesday, June 18, 2025 at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas, in the group stage of the CONCACAF tournament. After an unconvincing performance against the Dominican Republic, the team coached by Javier Aguirre will try to recover its good play and secure its place in the quarterfinals.

In its debut, the Mexican National Team defeated a tough Dominican Republic, ranked 139th in the FIFA ranking, 3-2. Despite the win, El Tri showed defensive weaknesses and a lack of offensive punch, which generated concern among Hispanic fans in the U.S., especially those who were expecting a clear victory against a theoretically inferior opponent.

For the match between Mexico and Suriname, defender Johan Vásquez, from Italy’s Genoa, is expected to return from injury and could play a key role in the central backline.

His presence would provide leadership and security, aspects that were lacking in the first meeting.

Mexico, currently ranked 17th in the FIFA rankings, needs a convincing victory to appease critics and establish itself as a serious contender in the tournament.

Coach Javier Aguirre has been criticized for his excessive praise of his opponents and lack of self-criticism, although he maintains the group’s confidence.

Suriname, on the other hand, is desperate for points.

In their debut, they lost to Costa Rica 4-3 with a last minute penalty kick.

The team is ranked 137th in FIFA, but has already shown that it can compete.

2-0 in 2023

However, Aguirre stressed that they should not underestimate any opponent.

If they win, El Tri will be at the top of Group A and will look to close the group stage as undefeated leaders when they face Costa Rica on June 22.
