The Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games are already shaping up to be a historic edition. During 19 days of competition, the world’s athletes will compete in 16 disciplines, grouped into eight main sports, which in turn are divided into three main categories: sliding, ice and snow.
In total, 116 events will be distributed per medal, the highest number in the history of an Olympic Winter Games.
Sliding sports

The sliding competitions of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games take place on tracks with steep slopes, sharp turns and long straights at high speed.
The bobsleigh uses a sled that weighs around 200 kilograms and can be manned by one, two or up to four athletes, depending on the event.
In skeleton and luge, the main difference lies in the athlete’s position:
In skeleton, you compete upside down and with your head forward.
While in luge the competitor goes upside down and feet first, reaching extreme speeds.
Ice sports

The ice disciplines of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games are mainly held in indoor venues.
Curling pits two teams against each other as they seek to place the greatest number of stones in the center of the “house” over ten innings, combining precision and strategy.
Speed skating takes place on a 400-meter oval track.
While the short track is played on a hockey-like court, with explosive running and frequent contact.
Ice hockey, one of the most popular sports on the Olympic program, will once again feature NHL players, who are returning to the Games after a 12-year absence.
Figure skating combines technique, rhythm and elegance in choreographies evaluated by judges.
Snow sports

Snow competitions are held in mountainous areas with cold weather.
The biathlon mixes cross-country skiing with sport shooting, forcing athletes to alternate demanding courses with rounds of shooting.
In ski jumping, normal and giant trampolines of 90 and 120 meters are used, and both distance and style are graded.
Nordic combined ski jumping and cross-country skiing and, since 1928, has not allowed female participation.
In Milano-Cortina 2026, men and women will compete for the first time with the same distances in cross-country skiing, ranging from 7.5 to 50 kilometers.
Alpine skiing takes place on steep slopes with marked gates.
While acrobatic skiing and snowboarding stand out for their jumps, tricks and turns, including the giant slalom.
Finally, ski mountaineering will debut as an Olympic discipline, with courses that include ascents and descents where athletes place and remove their skis during the event.
