The US Department of Defense confirmed the deployment of 700 military personnel to the states of Texas, Florida and Louisiana, as part of the reinforcement of immigration raids ordered by President Donald Trump. The announcement comes amid rising tensions over federal immigration policies and following multiple protests in key cities across the country.

According to the Pentagon’s official statement, the military will not be directly involved in detention or public safety work, but will have a logistical and administrative support role in immigration detention centers managed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The deployment comes against a backdrop of growing social rejection of Trump’s immigration actions.

The first demonstrations began in Los Angeles, where residents took to the streets peacefully.

Faced with this situation, the Republican president also ordered the dispatch of National Guard elements to California, which generated a strong institutional conflict with the state’s governor, Gavin Newsom.

The Democrat adamantly opposed the militarization of the state and his attorney general filed a federal lawsuit, alleging presidential abuse of power.

In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott had days earlier ordered the mobilization of the National Guard in anticipation of weekend protests.

Although there were demonstrations in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Austin, they were mostly peaceful, except for a few tense moments between activists and local authorities.

The federal government argues that the military presence is necessary to expedite the detention and deportation process.

While civil organizations have warned about the risk of criminalizing migration and militarizing vulnerable communities.
