Minnesota sued U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration on Monday over the large-scale operation deployed by immigration authorities in the state after a woman was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis last week.
In the complaint, Minnesota, along with the so-called ‘Twin Cities’ – Minneapolis and St. Paul – charges that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in the state “have spread fear among people who live, work and visit Minneapolis” and, in particular, the Twin Cities.

“Thousands of masked and armed agents have plagued the ‘Twin Cities’ conducting militarized raids and dangerous, unlawful and unconstitutional detentions in public spaces, including schools and hospitals,” the lawsuit states.
According to Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, authorities have made more than 2,000 arrests since this operation, known as ‘Metro Surge’, began last December.
The plaintiffs believe that this operation is motivated by “the Trump Administration’s desire to punish its political opponents.”
“Their actions appear designed to provoke anger in the communities, sow fear and cause emotional distress” in the population.
The state refers to the shooting by an ICE agent that killed Renee Nicole Good, 37, on Jan. 7 and calls for a halt to ICE operations in the area.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, a Democrat, presented the lawsuit at a press conference and applauded the fact that the city has “heroes who stand up for each other and support their neighbors”.
“One thing I can tell you with certainty is that we are not going to back down (…). We are standing up to the bullies and, at this moment, what we are asking for is the intervention of the court to reject this unconstitutional conduct,” he asserted.
Frey further asserted that city police officers are responding to “countless calls reporting the abduction of people” by officers “in unmarked uniforms who are taking U.S. citizens off the streets.”
This weekend, more than 1,000 protests were held in the U.S. against the immigration policy of Donald Trump’s administration and for the death of Good.
