Inter Miami’s 4-0 thrashing of FC Cincinnati in the MLS playoffs left more than just a big score: it sparked controversy over the behavior of some local players at the end of the match. Former Canadian soccer player and analyst Kaylyn Kyle called it “disgraceful” that several Cincinnati players approached Lionel Messi to ask him to exchange jerseys minutes after being eliminated at home.
The game, played at TQL Stadium, was one of Inter Miami’s most dominant since Messi’s arrival. Although both teams finished the regular season with 65 points, Cincinnati had been one of the best hosts in the East, boosted by their star player Evander. However, the team led by Javier Mascherano imposed authority from the start.
T-shirt exchange sparks criticism

Lionel Messi opened the scoring with a header from a cross by Argentine youth Mateo Silvetti, who surprisingly started in place of Luis Suarez.
In the second half, Miami extended its lead with Silvetti’s first MLS goal, a front-foot finish after an assist from Messi himself.
The night was capped off with a brace from Tadeo Allende, sealing Inter Miami’s qualification to the MLS Conference Final.
But beyond the performance, what generated debate were the images after the final whistle:
Several Cincinnati players approaching Messi to ask for his jersey despite being beaten at home and eliminated for the fourth consecutive year in the semifinals.
“How do you ask for the jersey of someone who just beat you 4-0 in front of your own fans?” criticized Kyle during the Apple TV broadcast.
“I understand being Messi, but your fans deserve respect. This performance was disappointing.”
The Argentine’s jersey ended up in the hands of Teenage Hadebe, while Luca Orellano also exchanged his.
Not everyone agreed with this attitude.
Striker Kévin Denkey said the last thing on his mind was a memory of Messi: “I don’t care about his jersey. I wanted to win. And I didn’t win. I’m sad.”
Noonan admits mistakes

Cincinnati coach Pat Noonan acknowledged clear tactical errors:
“We left too much space for Messi and we didn’t know how to control the transitions. When we missed our chances, the momentum changed completely.”
For Inter Miami, the win represents one of its best moments of the MLS season.
Messi continues to rack up impressive numbers in 2025:
More than 40 goals and more than 20 assists in all competitions, consolidating his position as a key part of the sporting project.
For the U.S. Hispanic community, especially those who have followed Messi since his arrival in MLS, the episode leaves an open conversation:
Should star idolatry or competitive respect be prioritized in difficult times?
Meanwhile, Miami advances firmly towards the Conference Final, where it will face New York City FC.
