The NBA re-sanctioned Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant with a $75,000 fine after making gestures imitating a gun during a recent game. This incident, which occurred in late March 2025, marks the second time in a week that Morant has violated the league’s official warnings, reigniting controversy over his behavior on and off the court.
During Thursday night’s game against the Miami Heat, Morant celebrated a three-pointer in the first quarter with a gun gesture: left arm extended, thumb up and index and middle fingers pointing forward, simulating a shot. The league confirmed that he did so on at least two occasions during the game.
He had already been warned

The first warning came just days earlier, when Ja Morant exchanged similar gestures with Golden State’s Buddy Hield in a game on Tuesday.
On that occasion, the league office called the gesture “inappropriate” and directly informed him that repeating it could lead to disciplinary consequences.
Despite that warning, the 25-year-old player made the same gesture again, prompting the NBA to impose a financial penalty.
The league said in an official statement that Ja Morant’s behavior “may be misinterpreted by the public”.
In addition, it is not in line with the values promoted by the organization.
A troubling track record

The controversy is not new. Ja Morant was suspended twice during the 2022-2023 season for displaying real firearms on social networks.
Since then, his behavior has been closely monitored by the league.

Although he has not reoffended in possession of weapons, his celebrations continue to generate controversy because of the symbolism they carry.
Especially in a country where gun violence is a socially sensitive issue.
Public reaction

The case has generated divided opinions among Latino NBA fans in the United States.
While some defend Ja Morant’s right of expression, others believe that, as a public figure, he should be more aware of the message he is conveying, especially to young audiences.
The $75,000 fine may not be the last sanction if Ja Morant continues to ignore the warnings.
The NBA has made it clear that, although the gesture does not involve an actual weapon, its symbolic implications do carry weight within the conduct policies.
