The Netflix platform announced Thursday the development of a new series based on the “passionate and turbulent” lives of Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, which will explore their personal and creative relationship in the political, social and artistic context of the 20th century.

According to the platform, in a press release, the series will address both the intimate dimension of the couple and the cultural and political environment that surrounded their work, at a time of strong transformations in Mexico.

“From the more intimate side of ‘Dove’ and ‘Elephant,’ it tells the story of a woman who refuses to be just a muse and decides to tell her own version of grief,” Netflix explained.

Netflix’s plans for Frida and Diego series

The series will be adapted from the book by French writer Claire Berest and will have María Renée Prudencio as head writer.

“This series reminds us that, despite time, we are still moved by the same thing: the irreducible desire to live, to love without half measures and to seek in art a way to survive pain,” the note concluded.

Netflix has not yet announced a release date or cast for the project.

Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), known for her self-portraits exploring pain, identity and Mexican culture, and Diego Rivera (1886-1957), one of the leading exponents of post-revolutionary muralism, are considered two of the most influential figures in 20th century Mexican art.

The two maintained an intense and often conflictive relationship – they married in 1929, divorced in 1939 and remarried in 1940 – while developing an oeuvre deeply linked to the political and cultural debates of post-Revolutionary Mexico, reported Agencia EFE.
