Almost 32 years after the death of Kurt Cobain, leader of Nirvana and one of the most influential figures of grunge, a new independent forensic report casts doubt on the official version of his death. Although the Seattle authorities maintain that the musician died by suicide on April 5, 1994, an unofficial group of specialists affirms that there are inconsistencies in the scene and in the autopsy that would point to a possible homicide.

The official version, maintained since 1994 by the Seattle Police Department, concluded that Cobain committed suicide with a shotgun in his Seattle home, in a context of heroin consumption. However, the new investigation – led by Brian Burnett, a specialist with experience in cases involving overdoses and gunshot wounds – maintains that some forensic findings would not be compatible with an instantaneous death by gunshot.

The report, quoted by the Daily Mail, claims that Kurt Cobain was forced to take an overdose of heroin to incapacitate him before he was fatally shot.

Among the items reported were the discovery of capped syringes.

As well as the heroin kit located several feet from the body and details of the scene.

According to independent investigators, they looked too “tidy” for a suicide.

Michelle Wilkins, a collaborator with the team, stated that suicides often present chaotic scenes.

Whereas in this case certain items – such as the lined-up cartridges and receipts found in the pocket – appeared to be deliberately organized.

In addition, the report notes that the autopsy recorded fluid in the lungs and other signs that, according to the team, would be more consistent with an overdose than an immediate death by firearm.

However, the Seattle Police Department reaffirmed that it will not reopen the case.

A spokesperson stated that the official investigation concluded suicide and that this remains the institutional position in force until 2026.

His death continues to generate debate

The Kurt Cobain case remains one of the most hotly debated in the history of music in the United States.

For many Hispanics who grew up listening to Nirvana or whose children are now discovering its legacy, this type of research rekindles questions about mental health.

Apart from drug use and the handling of media cases by the authorities.

It is important to note that, to date, there has been no official reopening of the case or formal charges against any individual.

The current legal version continues to be that of suicide.
