New York Mayor Eric Adams ordered the deployment of 1,000 police officers to the Bronx, in addition to those already working in the county, to deal with a wave of shootings that have left many dead and wounded, and said he also wants to meet with gang members, whom he considers responsible for the incidents of violence.

“One thousand supplementary agents are being deployed here to control critical points and areas where vigilance is required,” said last night the mayor, who also wants to send professional mediators as part of the initiative he is undertaking to deal with the situation. “We are going to put in place a full mobilization plan,” he assured.

Eric Adams went to Haffen Park in the Bronx, where on August 23 five people were shot and wounded in a gang violence incident during a basketball game in which a 32-year-old man, who was attending the game, was killed and four others were injured.

Adams was accompanied by members of the police, neighborhood politicians, and members of the prosecutor’s office.

“I’m going to see if I can convince some of the gang members to come and sit down (to talk).

“It could be at Gracie Mansion (the mayor’s official residence), or here. We need to sit down and engage in the conversation,” Adams said.

“They need to understand the consequences of their actions,” he argued.

The Democrat indicated that he hopes to meet with gang members in the coming days and recalled that he held this type of meeting when he was Brooklyn Borough President “and I can do it as mayor as well.”

The mayor emphasized during his message that armed aggressors are becoming younger and younger, and so are the victims of shootings.

“When bullets fly because of gang disputes, they don’t stop to say, ‘Well, this is not a rival gang member,’ or ‘this is a rival gang member.’ They end the life of an innocent person,” he said during a message in the park.

Trump to send in the troops?

Police data show that as of Aug. 23, 215 people have been injured by firearms in this county so far this year, down 23.5% from the same period last year.

The spate of shootings prompted veteran former Bronx legislator and president of the Hispanic Ministers Association, Rev. Ruben Diaz, to call through his X account for the National Guard to be sent to this majority-Latino county, as President Donald Trump has done in Washington.

Trump sent military troops to Washington DC, announced he will do the same with Chicago and warned New York that he might also take that step in the Big Apple.

Voy a ver si puedo convencer a algunos de los pandilleros para que vengan y se sienten (a conversar)
