Omar Cruz, a pitcher from Sonora, Mexico, was confirmed as part of the San Diego Padres roster for the Opening Day of the 2025 MLB season. His return to the Major Leagues came as a surprise to the player himself, who shared his reaction and how he received the news with great excitement.

Cruz, 25, said he was in El Paso, Texas, preparing to join the Triple A team when he received an unexpected call from his manager. “I was already on my way to the AAA League and then my manager called me and said: ‘You’re going to San Diego’. I didn’t believe it, I still don’t believe it, we are excited,” said the pitcher. Immediately after hanging up, he shared the news with his family, first calling his father to tell him and asking him to put his mother and sister on speaker phone.

After having a brief stint with the Padres in the 2021 season, and being out of the organization in 2023, Omar Cruz worked hard to earn a new opportunity.

Now, in 2025, he returns to the team with a clear role within the bullpen.

In conversation with manager Mike Shildt, Omar Cruz was informed of his role as a long reliever.

This is a key position to maintain pitching stability during games in which the starter is removed early.

“My best pitching is the changeup, it’s the one that gives me the most confidence and the one they like the most,” he commented.
