Entertainment giant Netflix confirmed Thursday the production of the sequel to ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’, expanding the universe of the platform’s most watched movie.

The production, still without a release date, will again be in charge of Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, while Sony Pictures Animation will be in charge of animating the story.

With ‘KPop Demon Hunters,’ “Maggie and Chris not only reached audiences, but sparked a global fan community that transcended languages, generations and genres,” Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria said in a statement.

“We are extremely proud to deepen our collaboration with them and, together with our partners at Sony Pictures Animation, build this universe in ways that will surprise and delight fans,” he added.

The sequel to the animated feature film is confirmed after several months of speculation about a possible extension of the ‘KPop Demon Hunter’ phenomenon, which has become a hit on the platform, crowning it as the most watched production in history.

“These characters are like family to us; their world has become our second home. We are excited to write their next chapter, to challenge them and watch them evolve, and to continue to push the boundaries of integration between music, animation and story,” said Appelhans.

The film about a female K-pop group chasing monsters while balancing their lives in the spotlight has cemented K-pop as a global cultural phenomenon that goes far beyond music.

The song ‘Golden’, by the fictional group from the film HUNTR/X, surpassed 100 million weekly plays worldwide for the first time ever, according to Billboard.

The main theme song, performed by the protagonists at the end of the film, also topped the Billboard Global 200 chart in the first week of August with 113.4 million plays, a 15% increase over the previous week and surpassing hits such as ‘Ordinary’ by Alex Warren or ‘Jump’ by the South Korean band BLACKPINK.

“As a Korean filmmaker, I feel immensely proud that audiences want more of this story and our Korean characters. There is so much more to this world we have created and I am excited to show it to them. This is just the beginning,” said Kang, reported Agencia EFE.
