The Kansas City Chiefs announced Sunday that three-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL during the team’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
“An MRI confirmed that our quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in today’s game. Patrick and the club are exploring surgical options,” the team wrote in a statement.
The move that changed the season
Mahomes was injured in the closing minutes of his team’s 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
A loss that left them without options to qualify for the playoffs with three games left in the regular season.
The action in which he was injured occurred less than two minutes before the end of the game, when Patrick Mahomes was looking to lead his team to a comeback.
The pin left the protective bag in search of a receiver.
When he couldn’t find it he ran for yardage, but was tackled from behind by a defender and his left knee locked up in the turf.
This caused him to lie on the field with a visible rictus of pain, so he was taken from the field to the locker room.
“I will come back stronger than ever.”
After the Chiefs reported the extent of the injury, the three-time Super Bowl MVP issued a message in which he promised a triumphant return for 2026.
“I don’t know why this had to happen. I’m not going to lie, it hurts.”
“But now we can only trust in God and fight day after day. Thanks to the Chiefs for always supporting me and to everyone who has contacted me and sent prayers.”
“I’ll come back stronger than ever,” the quarterback said.
Patrick Mahomes has played his entire career for Kansas City, the team that drafted him in the first round of the 2017 Draft.
Mahomes’ legacy and an unexpected ending
Since 2018, Patrick Mahomes has become the offensive heart and soul of the franchise he has led to five of the most recent six Super Bowl appearances.
He has been victorious on three occasions, achievements that have led to comparisons with Tom Brady, the best player in the history of the NFL.
An earlier loss to the Chargers left the Chiefs without a chance to reach the postseason for the first time since he has been at the controls.
