The age difference between couples is still a taboo subject in societies that presume to be modern, such as the Western one, especially when the woman is older than the man, as narrated by Lu and Javi, played by Mexican actors Ludwika Paleta and Juanpa Zurita in the romantic comedy ‘¿Quieres ser mi novia?’ (Do you want to be my girlfriend?).
“It requires a lot of work to expose what is behind a couple with an age difference after the falling in love phase (…) It is how this is faced in reality. There is love and there may be a certain amount of attraction, but there will be other variables such as pressure, duty or the biological part,” explains Zurita in an interview with EFE.
The actor and influencer, known since 2013 when he started posting videos on Vine, explains that for this sequel to ‘Will You Be My Son’ (2023) they already left behind that phase in which a man and a woman who have been together for almost 20 years start to be together, but now problems such as the maturity mistakes of a young man of 24 years or the ambitions of a woman over 40 appear.

“Javi makes a lot of mistakes in this sequel, which speaks of his immaturity, but I think love is not at all a generational thing. It’s about finding the person who awakens that feeling in you and it’s beautiful when it happens,” explains the Mexican about how younger people still believe in love.
While you might think that the younger one makes the most mistakes, Lu won’t want to see that her new beau is a man more focused on his work than his relationship, explains Paleta about the ‘red flags’ one sometimes misses with their partners.
“There will always be men who will be a red flag, it is up to you to know who that person is. I think that sometimes we let these signs that the person gives you pass by, which is usually clear to see how it is. One tends to let those warnings go by,” says the actress.
Will you be my Bride? : Comedy to deepen
In many occasions, themes such as those of ‘¿Quieres ser mi novia?’ tend to turn a film into a romantic drama, but, according to Paleta, known for telenovelas such as ‘Duelo de pasiones’ (2006), comedy allows to face “very deep and serious things” in a “not so confrontational or aggressive way”.
“Suddenly you realize you’re laughing at one of a thing you shouldn’t be laughing at, and you go into this shock of saying, well very funny but this is something I need to think about more seriously,” he adds.

Comedy is one of the highest-grossing genres in the region, and without going any further, the first installment of ‘¿Quieres ser mi hijo’ became the most watched film on the streaming platform ViX for months, which helped the production company Videocine to bet on producing a second film for theaters.
“It’s extraordinary for a film to come out first on platform and then make the bet in theaters. There must be very few stories of a first film on platform and the sequel in theaters,” he comments.
The only age restriction will be to be over 15 years old to be able to enjoy it on the big screen, reported Agencia EFE.
