As the war in Iran nears its first month of hostilities, the Pentagon has decided to go “all in”. According to CNN reports, thousands of U.S. Marines have changed their original course in the Indo-Pacific to head full steam ahead to the Middle East.
This strategic move includes the 11th Infantry Expeditionary Unit and the Boxer Amphibious Group, elite forces that initially had missions in Asia, but have now been reassigned to reinforce the campaign that began on February 28.

Thousands of U.S. Marines are headed to the Middle East as the Iran war nears its one-month anniversary, CNN reported Friday, citing two U.S. officials.
The 11th Marine Expeditionary Infantry Unit and the Boxer Amphibious Group, which were initially deployed to the Indo-Pacific, have had their route modified and are now headed to the Middle East.
The media adds that it is not clear whether the entire group will be deployed in that region or only a part of it. Nor does it report on what specific tasks they will perform upon arrival.
Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that the 31st Expeditionary Unit and the Tripoli Amphibious Group, which was in Japan, were headed to the Middle East. Last Tuesday, they were near Singapore.
A lethal response force
US-based news site Newsmax is reporting that US military forces are preparing to send several warships along with 4,000 marines and sailors to “reinforce its troops fighting against Iran”, citing four unnamed officials.

What does this deployment mean for the conflict? We are talking about units designed for immediate combat:
Troops: It is estimated that between 2,200 and 4,500 additional Marines and sailors will arrive in the area.
Capabilities: These units have their own ground and air combat component, trained to sustain high-intensity special operations for weeks at a time.
Constant Pressure: This group joins Expeditionary Unit 31 and the Tripoli Amphibious Group, which were already sailing from Japan to the Gulf earlier this week.

Although President Donald Trump has bragged on social media about having “decimated” the Iranian military, the deployment of these rapid response units suggests that the ground is not yet secure or that large-scale landing operations are being prepared.
So far, the administration has not given an end date for the war it is jointly waging with Israel, leaving the international community on tenterhooks as to whether these Marines are going on a peace mission or for a prolonged occupation.
