If you’ve logged on to TikTok lately, you’ve probably seen hundreds of people boiling rosemary sprigs in their kitchen, swearing it’s the secret to stopping hair loss and having a Rapunzel mane. They call it the “Natural Minoxidil”.
But is this just another urban myth or can a $2 herb really compete with the number one drug against baldness? We did some research and the answer will surprise you: It is not placebo, it does work, but there are “fine print”.
What the famous study says (2015)
The fame of rosemary is not invented.
It comes from a comparative clinical study conducted in 2015 (published in SKINmed).
Scientists put rosemary oil in competition with 2% Minoxidil.
The result? After 6 months of daily use, both groups showed a significant and almost identical increase in the amount of new hair.
The bonus point for rosemary: It caused much less itching and dry scalp than the chemical medication.
Why does it work?
Rosemary is rich in carnosic acid, a compound that has two superpowers:
Improves blood circulation: Like Minoxidil, it dilates the blood vessels in the scalp, allowing more nutrients to reach the follicle.
Anti-inflammatory and Antioxidant: Soothes irritated scalp and fights free radicals that age your hair.
Does it block DHT? There are indications that it may help block dihydrotestosterone (the hormone to blame for male and female baldness), although here Minoxidil remains the potential king.
The right recipe (not just boil and go)
For it to work, you need consistency. You won’t see results in a week.
Ingredients: 3 sprigs of fresh rosemary (dried rosemary loses potency) and 2 cups of water.
Preparation: Boil the water, add the rosemary, turn off the heat and cover the pot. Let it stand until it cools completely (this prevents the essential oils from evaporating).
Application: Strain the liquid (it should be dark amber in color), put it in a spray bottle and spray on the scalp every night, massaging for 5 minutes.
Shelf life: Store in the refrigerator for a maximum of 1 week. After that, it loses effect and breeds bacteria.
The verdict: Rosemary or pharmacy?
If you have advanced or severe genetic baldness, Minoxidil 5% (prescribed by a dermatologist) remains the most potent and fastest option.
But if your hair loss is due to stress, postpartum, or you simply want more density and shine without harsh chemicals, rosemary water is a legitimate, inexpensive and effective option.
Just remember the golden rule: Patience.
Actual results take 3 to 6 months.
