Saquon Barkley, running back for the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles, was named last season’s NFL Top 100 player of the year on Monday.
This is the 15th consecutive year that the NFL’ s nearly 1,700 players have voted to determine the season’s top 100.
Saquon Barkley was instrumental in the Eagles’ run to victory in Super Bowl LIX last February.
The running back had a 2,005-yard season, becoming the ninth player to surpass 2,000 yards on the ground. He also scored 13 touchdowns. In the playoffs he totaled 499 yards and five touchdowns.
With his regular season and playoff records, Saquon Barkley set the mark of 2,504 ground yards in a year.
The list of the top 10 players in the ‘NFL Top 100′ was completed by Lamar Jakson, quarterback of the Baltimore Ravens, chosen as the second best of last season.
Buffalo Bills passer Josh Allen, who was named Most Valuable Player for the 2024 season, received enough votes to place third on the list.
The 2024 triple crown winner for most touchdown receptions, yards per pass and total receptions, Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase ranked fourth best.
Patrick Mahomes, champion quarterback in Super Bowls LIV, LVII and LVIII with the Kansas City Chiefs, the most dominant dynasty of the current decade, ranked number five on the list.
Position six went to Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, the 2024 leader in yards per pass (4,918) and touchdowns (43).
The 31-year-old veteran Derrick Henry, the Ravens’ running back, was seventh best thanks to his numbers of 1,921 yards on the ground and 16 touchdowns.
Myles Garret, defensive end for the Cleveland Browns, ranked eighth in peer voting. Garret is a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks; he has seven consecutive seasons over 10 catches as a passer.
At number nine came Justin Jefferson, a 26-year-old Minnesota Vikings star who last June became the league’s highest-paid receiver with an annual salary of $35 million.
Closing out this select group of the top 10 was Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II, who has been a three-time Pro Bowl and two-time All-Pro in his four-year NFL career.
Colombian Christian Gonzalez, cornerback for the New England Patriots, ranked 84th among the most outstanding players; he was the only player with Latin roots in the NFL Top 100, according to EFE.
