Alvarez, considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters of recent times, has dominated the 168-pound division since 2021.

In February of this year he signed a landmark contract with the Saudi Arabian government, led by Turki Al-Sheikh, for five fights worth a total of $400 million.

This new chapter began in May with his victory over Cuban William Scull in Riyadh, where he regained the International Boxing Federation (IBF) belt, consolidating his position as WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF absolute champion.

“Turki is the one I will surely retire with. He can give me the opportunity to fulfill my dream of fighting for the first time in Japan,” said the boxer from Guadalajara.

Alvarez’s next fight will be against none other than Terence Crawford, a multi-time four-division champion.

The fight was initially scheduled for September 12, but the tapatío confirmed that it will be on Saturday, September 13 in Las Vegas, coinciding with the Mexican Independence Day celebrations.

“I told them I don’t fight on Fridays. For us Mexicans, Saturday is more important because it is part of our national holidays. It looks like it’s going to be in Las Vegas, depending on what Turki says,” he said.

Why does this matter to Latinos in the U.S.?

For the Hispanic community in the United States, Canelo Alvarez represents much more than a world champion.

His story, from cleaning cars in his childhood to signing multimillion dollar contracts, has been a symbol of effort and achievement for millions of immigrants.

His planned retirement not only marks the end of an era in boxing, but also opens a space to reflect on the legacy he leaves behind.

An icon who has raised the name of Mexico and the Latin community on the world’s most demanding sporting stages.

As he prepares for his final fights, Alvarez remains focused on leaving an indelible legacy, not only with titles, but with strategic decisions that will keep him as a reference even outside the ring.
